Stanley controls 33% of the tape measure category at Home Depot, Lowe's, and Menards as of October 2024, holding four of the top five best-selling SKUs. Milwaukee, the clear number two, dropped from 24% to 22% over the same quarter while Stanley climbed from 31% to 33%. The FATMAX line alone generates more than 15% of total category dollars.
Stanley's top four SKUs are all 25 ft. or 35 ft. tapes across the FATMAX and PowerLock families: the 25 ft. FATMAX at $24 (5.4% dollar share), the 35 ft. FATMAX at $36 (4.1%), the 25 ft. PowerLock at $11 (3.0%), and the 25 ft. FATMAX Magnetic at $28 (2.8%). Together they account for over 15% of category dollars.
The $11 PowerLock captures the value buyer. The $36 FATMAX targets the pro who needs extra reach. Stanley covers the full price spectrum in four SKUs, leaving little room for a competitor to find a gap.
Milwaukee holds the fifth-ranked SKU, a Compact 25 ft. tape at $17 (2.8%). But overall brand share slipped from 24% in August to 22% in October while Stanley moved from 31% to 33%. The 2-point swing in each direction widened the gap from 7 points to 11.
Milwaukee's tape measure strategy mirrors its broader hand-tool push — leveraging its power tool installed base to cross-sell accessories. At 22%, it remains the clear number two, but the gap is growing rather than closing.
DeWalt holds roughly 13% — distant third but stable across all three months. Below that, more than a dozen brands including Craftsman, Crescent Lufkin, Komelon, Kobalt, and Klein Tools each hold low single-digit share.
The top three — Stanley, Milwaukee, and DeWalt — collectively control roughly 68% of the category, leaving about a third split among private-label and niche players.
Datavations tracks every SKU, every store, every sale across 11,936+ locations daily — the granularity needed to spot a 2-point share swing in a category this fragmented.
Stanley leads with 33% dollar share as of October 2024, holding four of the top five SKUs. Milwaukee is second at 22%, and DeWalt third at 13%.
Stanley's 25 ft. FATMAX leads at 5.4% dollar share with an ASP of $24. It outsells every other individual tape measure at Home Depot, Lowe's, and Menards.
Milwaukee actually lost 2 points in Q3 2024, dropping from 24% to 22% while Stanley gained from 31% to 33%. Stanley widened its lead despite Milwaukee's aggressive hand-tool expansion.
