The multi-position ladder category at Home Depot and Lowe's belongs to exactly three brands: Gorilla, Werner, and Little Giant Ladders. Together they hold virtually all category dollars, with no other brand registering meaningful share. Gorilla leads at 37.0% as of October 2024, Werner holds 25.4%, and Little Giant sits at 37.5% — a near-perfect three-way split that left no room for anyone else on the shelf.
Little Giant climbed from 35.1% in August to 37.5% in October — a 2.4-point gain. Werner moved in the opposite direction, dropping from 30.7% to 25.4%, a 5.3-point decline. Gorilla gained nearly 3 points, rising from 34.2% to 37.0%.
Werner's loss is the quarter's defining story. A 5.3-point drop shifted the category from a roughly even three-way race into one where Werner trails by 12 points.
Despite trailing in overall share, Werner holds two of the top five SKUs — a 26 ft. Pro at $311 (10.9%) and a 22 ft. Pro at $232 (9.9%). Gorilla also holds two: a 22 ft. at $220 (11.3%) and an 18 ft. at $197 (9.8%). Little Giant's Multi M22 at $240 (9.6%) rounds out the top five.
Werner targets the professional buyer with Type IAA 375 lb. capacity at $232 to $311. Gorilla undercuts at $197 to $220 with 300 lb. capacity. The five SKUs combined account for over 51% of category dollars.
Most building materials categories have a long tail of smaller brands splitting 10% to 20% of the shelf. Multi-position ladders have none. The barrier is structural — safety certification, liability coverage, and specialized manufacturing keep casual entrants out.
This makes every share point a direct transfer between incumbents. Werner's 5.3-point loss did not scatter across a dozen competitors. It went to Gorilla and Little Giant in nearly equal measure. Datavations tracks every SKU, every store, every sale across 11,936+ locations daily — precision that matters most in concentrated categories where a few points reshape the competitive order.
Little Giant Ladders and Gorilla are effectively tied for the lead at 37.5% and 37.0% dollar share as of October 2024. Werner trails at 25.4%, down from 30.7% in August.
The category is a pure three-brand market — Gorilla, Werner, and Little Giant hold virtually 100% of dollar share. No other brand registers meaningful sales.
Little Giant gained 2.4 points (35.1% to 37.5%) and Gorilla gained 2.8 points (34.2% to 37.0%) between August and October 2024. Werner lost 5.3 points over the same period.
