Bosch's dollar share of the laser level category at Home Depot and Lowe's dropped from 59% in May 2024 to 50% in July — a 9-point decline in three months. Milwaukee surged from 13% to 19%, and Kobalt nearly doubled from 8% to 14%. Bosch still leads and holds three of the top five SKUs, but a category it dominated at nearly 60% is now a three-way race for second place.
Bosch holds the top two SKUs — a 1000-ft. rotary laser kit at $683 (10.5% dollar share) and an 800 ft. rotary kit at $630 (9.5%) — plus a 50 ft. cross-line at $60 (5.4%) in the fifth spot. Those three SKUs alone account for over 25% of category dollars.
Bosch covers the $60 DIY buyer and the $683 professional, but that breadth was not enough to prevent a 9-point slide.
Milwaukee climbed from 13% to 19%, driven by its M12 battery-platform strategy. Its top SKU, a 3-Plane laser kit at $599, uses the same 12-volt battery ecosystem that powers its drills and impact drivers. A contractor already invested in M12 faces zero friction adding a Milwaukee laser.
Kobalt nearly doubled from 8% to 14%. As Lowe's private-label brand, Kobalt benefits from shelf placement and promotional support that national brands cannot match at that retailer.
DeWalt dropped from 10% to 7% despite holding the third-ranked SKU — a 100 ft. Green Cross-Line at $170 (9.3%), the most accessible entry point in the top four. DeWalt is squeezed between Bosch's premium dominance and Milwaukee's battery-ecosystem pull.
The category is now a four-brand story: Bosch at 50%, Milwaukee at 19%, Kobalt at 14%, DeWalt at 7%. ASPs in the top five range from $60 to $683, meaning a few high-ticket sales can shift dollar share significantly.
Datavations tracks every SKU, every store, every sale across 11,936+ locations daily, catching the kind of rapid share movement that reshapes a category between line reviews.
Bosch leads with 50% dollar share as of July 2024, holding three of the top five SKUs. But the brand dropped 9 points in a single quarter while Milwaukee and Kobalt gained aggressively.
Milwaukee surged from 13% to 19% and Kobalt nearly doubled from 8% to 14% between May and July 2024. Both gained at Bosch's expense.
High ASPs — the top four SKUs range from $170 to $683 — mean relatively few unit sales can move dollar share significantly. Milwaukee's M12 battery ecosystem and Kobalt's private-label shelf advantage are accelerating the shift.
